LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Elizabeth Pinkerton Middle School Community,

I would like to take this opportunity to either welcome you to Elizabeth Pinkerton Middle School or welcome you back for the start of your child’s 8th grade year. The 2019-2020 school year will mark my fifth year as the principal and I feel fortunate to be working with such a great community of learners, teachers, and parents/guardians.

This year, we are continuing our focus in three areas: equity, professional learning communities (PLCs) and Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS). As a school, we want to make sure we are addressing the whole child and meeting their wellness needs along with their academic needs. Our school’s work around equity has examined issues of implicit bias, racism, stereotypes, and micro-aggressions in an effort to ensure we are continuously examining our mindsets and serving all students well.

Our PLC work will continue this year. This work is done at the department level and at the team level. Our departments meet every Monday and Wednesday during the late start to work collaboratively. We have embarked on a journey to become more data driven with our instruction and this work demands more of our teachers. All subjects have developed essential skills based on what they deem vitally important for students to learn. Our core subjects will give a common assessment based on the essentials and will then analyze the data to determine which students need more time for learning the skill(s) or who may need extension activities. Our Wednesday Wolfpack time will be used to intervene/enrich as needed. We are already successful with many of our students and through this work, we will be able to reach even more students.

To begin the school year, your child will participate in a PBIS Kickoff the first two days of school. PBIS is the foundation of our climate at EPMS. We strive to set the expectations in a positive manner and hold our students accountable. These two days will be spent teaching our expectations in a fun and interactive way. In the morning students will participate with their Advocacy class in the kickoff and will then follow their class schedule later in the day. We know this will help set a positive tone for the school year.

I look forward to meeting you and working together as the EPMS community. I hope you will take advantage of opportunities to visit the school and to stay actively involved in your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Chandra Victor, Principal

Elizabeth Pinkerton Middle School
