Physical Education Department Overview

Physical Education Department Overview

The Physical Education Department is excited for the new school year and we’re looking forward to seeing our returning students, as well as meeting our new 7th graders.

Over the course of the school year, the students will be challenged with a variety of units that are aligned with the California Standards for teaching Physical Education.  The units will include activities that promote physical fitness, health and well-being.  The 7th grade curriculum includes, but is not limited to: Badminton, Track & Field, Disc Sports, and Stanford Tool Kit.  The 8th grade curriculum includes, but is not limited to: Flag Football, Dance, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Stanford Tool Kit and Lacrosse.  7th grade units and activities reflect individual and dual sports, whereas 8th grade units reflect team-oriented sports.
All 7th grade students will be participating in state mandated fitness testing.  The fitness test will challenge students in the areas of cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength.  These fitness tests will include, but not limited to: the mile run and/or pacers, the shoulder stretch and/or sit and reach, push-ups, curl-ups, and the trunk lift.  Pre-testing will take place at the beginning of Term 1 and Term 2, with actual testing taking place during Term 3 and Term 4.  Students will be preparing for the fitness tests through on-going and continuous opportunities to improve strength and cardiovascular fitness on a daily basis during warm-ups and fitness activities.

All students will have an opportunity to purchase PE clothes during the first week of school, as they do not need to have anything prior to the first day.  The physical education uniform at Elizabeth Pinkerton Middle School consists of an EPMS T-shirt or athletic shirt of your choice (must be crew neck and with sleeves).  EPMS shorts or athletic shorts of your choice (must be appropriate school dress code length and cannot be jeans, cargo, khaki, etc.)  EPMS sweatpants/sweatshirts or athletic sweats of your choice (color does not matter).  Socks and athletic shoes (closed toe shoes with an athletic sole) (Crocs, slides, sandals, heels are not allowed.)

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our department.  We are glad to help and are excited for the upcoming school year!

Physical Activity Log (PAL) Requirements

Physical Activity Log (PAL) Requirements

What are PALs?
Physical Activity Logs (or PALs) are required by the State of California from schools using the Block Schedule format. Students must prove they are exercising 400 minutes every 10 school days.

How will PALs be graded?
PALs are turned in the first week students enter PE. For Term 2 PE students, logs are turned in during the first week of school. Term 1 PE Students, will submit a PAL during the first week of Term 3 demonstrating their activity during Term 2 when they were enrolled in Science. Teachers will grade the logs based on completeness. Students may earn as much as 5% of their total PE grade from their PAL log. Logs without a parent signature will not be accepted.

Locker Room Backpack Policy

Locker Room Backpack Policy

Transporting books and supplies to and from school each day seems to be more of an issue than ever before. Today's backpacks are technological marvels but with function and features comes size. Our locker room was not designed to secure such large bags and there is no place for them inside our lockers. Our department has instituted the following policy regarding large backpacks that will not fit inside our lockers.

  1. Students may take their bags with them during Physical Education. See your teacher for guidance and options.
  2. Students should store their backpacks inside their locked locker in our locker room.
  3. Rolling backpacks will not fit in our lockers and must be stored, without valuables, in the designated bag storage area.
  4. The locker room is locked during class. Students have been instructed to always lock up their valuables regardless of option chosen.

The physical fitness test (PFT) for students in California schools is the FITNESSGRAM®. The main goal of the test is to help students in starting life-long habits of regular physical activity. Students in grades five, seven, and nine take the fitness test. The test has six parts that show a level of fitness that offer a degree of defense against diseases that come from inactivity. The test results can be used by students, teachers, and parents. Please familiarize yourself with the Fitnessgram Performance Standards.

EPMS Standards for Hydration:
Our Physical Education space has multiple water fountains and students are released to use them regularly, especially on warmer days. However, optimal hydration requires students to have a water bottle with them during Physical Education.
